Returns are the most expensive problem in Chinese cross-border fashion e-commerce in 2026. The number one reason: sizing. Chinese consumers return clothes bought from foreign brands at rates 2-3x higher than domestic brands, almost entirely due to fit and sizing communication problems. This is a solvable problem that most SME brands ignore until the return rate makes their margin untenable.
The Sizing Gap Between Europe and China
Chinese women’s sizing standards differ from European standards in three important ways:
| Measurement | European standard (typical sample size) | Chinese standard (typical) |
|---|---|---|
| Height reference | 175cm | 160-165cm |
| Shoulder width | Broader | Narrower by 1-2cm average |
| Hip-to-waist ratio | Proportionally smaller hips | Proportionally fuller hips relative to waist |
| Sleeve length | Longer | 2-4cm shorter for same torso size |
A European size M may fit a Chinese consumer in the torso but have sleeves that are too long and shoulders that are too wide. This is not a product defect — it is a communication problem. The consumer needed to know to size down or choose a different fit.
What You Need to Add to Every Product Listing
- Garment measurements in centimetres: not just S/M/L/XL. Actual bust, waist, hip, length, and sleeve measurements for each size. This is required for Tmall Global listings and is best practice on every platform.
- Model measurements and the size she is wearing: “Model is 163cm, 50kg, wearing size S.” This single piece of information reduces returns more than any other single intervention.
- Fit description in Chinese: “This piece is cut slim through the shoulder. If you are between sizes, we recommend sizing up.” In Mandarin, direct and specific.
- A size comparison chart: showing the Chinese size equivalent for each of your sizes (European S = Chinese M, etc.) if applicable.
Should You Adapt the Product for China?
Some brands go further and produce China-specific size runs — shorter sleeves, narrower shoulders. This is the right move if your China volume justifies the production run (typically above 500 units per SKU per season). For smaller volumes, communication is more cost-effective than product adaptation.
Mid-term, if China becomes 20%+ of your revenue, a China-fit consideration in your design process pays off in return rate reduction and customer satisfaction scores. We have seen brands reduce China return rates from 28% to 9% purely through sizing communication improvements, with no product change required.
Customer Service Sizing Support
Chinese consumers ask sizing questions before purchasing at a much higher rate than European consumers. Set up a WeChat customer service flow that answers sizing questions within 30 minutes during business hours. A consumer who gets a clear sizing answer converts at 60%+ to purchase. A consumer who does not get an answer within 2 hours buys from a competitor.
