The latest report from Bain reports a slowdown in luxury goods consumption in China in 2024, with projections for single-digit growth in 2024 (compared to a rate of 12% in 2023). At the same time, the report also mentions a “luxury shame” phenomenon, comparable to what occurred in the United States in 2008-2009 during the financial crisis.
What is the reality? Should brands be concerned?

While the slowdown in luxury goods consumption continues in China, this does not necessarily mean that Chinese consumers’ appetite for luxury goods is diminishing in absolute terms. In a context of economic slowdown and job uncertainty, many young Chinese have decided to shift and/or postpone their purchases, with new choices emerging. The 16-24 age group (excluding students) is facing an unemployment rate of 14.7% in April (National Bureau of Statistics); while the ratio of job offers for master’s and doctoral graduates stands at 33.2%, a drop of 17 points compared to last year (Zhaopin recruitment data 2024).
