A designer showed me her spring campaign in July. Eleven looks, beautifully shot, built around a sculptural coat she had spent a year developing. She wanted to know which three looks to push on Xiaohongshu.

I asked what her customers had actually saved from last season. She did not know. We looked. It was a ribbed knit top she sells for 890 RMB and had never once put in a campaign.

The 2026 half-year platform data explains exactly why.

What the numbers say

On 21 July 2026, the first-half industry figures for Xiaohongshu were published in the Chinese trade press, drawn from 千瓜数据 platform tracking. The apparel section is the clearest read I have seen on where Chinese attention actually went this year.

Knitwear and sweaters, seeded notes +78%
Base layers and underlayers +68%
Silver jewellery +54%
Bag charms and accessories +53%
Commercial note saves, year on year +60%
Commercial note interactions +52%

And the share of category attention inside fashion:

Clothing and footwear 68.34%
Jewellery 22.38%
Bags and luggage 9.28%

Look at that growth column again. Knitwear. Base layers. Silver. Bag charms. Not one statement piece in the list. The four fastest growing things on the biggest fashion discovery platform in China are a jumper, the thing you wear under the jumper, an affordable metal, and a small object you hang off a bag you already own.

Softfit, and what it is really telling you

The report names the dominant aesthetic Softfit: soft fabrics, low saturation colour, comfortable cut. It is easy to file that under trend forecasting and move on. I would not.

Softfit is a purchase behaviour wearing the clothes of a trend. It describes a shopper who has stopped buying to be seen and started buying to be comfortable in her own week. She is asking whether a garment suits her body as it is now, her actual routine, her temperament. That is a different question from “is this in fashion”, and it produces a different basket.

It also explains the bag charms. A 53% rise in 包饰挂件 is not a new category appearing from nowhere. It is a customer who wants the pleasure of a new thing without the commitment of a new bag. Same instinct as the silver, same instinct as the knit.

None of this means the sculptural coat was a mistake. The coat is why she is credible. It is just not what gets saved, and saves are the currency on this platform.

From a conversation this summer

Designer, independent French womenswear label, sold in China through a Xiaohongshu store: If I lead with the knit top, doesn’t the brand just become a knitwear brand? That top is not why I do this.

Cindy: It becomes the door, not the house. Nobody walks in through the coat at 4,200 RMB. They walk in through the thing they can say yes to on a Tuesday evening.

Designer: So the coat disappears.

Cindy: The opposite. The coat stays in the campaign film, on the shop page, in press. It is the reason the knit top is worth 890 rather than 300. What changes is which piece carries the content. Let the knit do the recruiting and let the coat do the convincing.

Designer: How do I know it is working if the coat is not selling more?

Cindy: Watch repeat buyers, not revenue. If the women buying the knit come back within two seasons, the door is working. If they buy once and vanish, you sold a jumper, and that is a different business.

What I would do with this before the next collection drop

Find your knit top. Pull the last two seasons of Xiaohongshu content and rank by saves, not likes. Likes are politeness. Saves are intent. The piece at the top is very often not the piece marketing chose.

Build one real entry product, properly made. Somewhere between 800 and 2,500 RMB for most premium labels. Same fabric standard, same finishing, same box. A small object made well reads as generous. A large object made cheaply reads as desperate.

Take the accessory growth seriously. Charms, silver, small leather, hair pieces. These are the lowest-friction way into a Chinese wardrobe right now, and they are the categories growing fastest.

Match content format to the piece. A coat wants a film. A knit top wants a real person in a real room showing how it sits on her shoulders. The second is cheaper and, at the moment, more effective.

If you sell as well as seed

The reason all of this compounds is that discovery and purchase now sit in the same app. The team at Ecommerce China Agency make the point plainly in their piece on niche labels: “In China, niche fashion is a discovery-driven business, and Xiaohongshu is the new discovery engine.” A brand with no shop attached is doing the recruiting and letting someone else take the sale.

If you are still deciding whether to open one, we walked through the mechanics in RedNote Store: the easiest way to start selling fashion in China. And for the content side, how to build a Xiaohongshu strategy for a fashion brand covers the cadence.

The part I would argue about

One reading of this data is that Chinese fashion consumption has permanently moved down in price and up in comfort. Another is that we are looking at a cautious moment, and that when confidence returns the statement piece returns with it.

I lean toward the first for the cohort under thirty-five, whose entire adult buying life has happened in a slow economy. But I have been wrong about how fast Chinese taste turns before, and anyone who tells you they are certain is guessing with confidence.

What I would not do is design a 2027 range with no door in it.

Which piece in your range gets saved most on Xiaohongshu, and is it the one you expected? I would genuinely like to know.
