Xiaohongshu for Small Fashion Brands: How to Start With Zero Followers

I had a call last month with a French accessories brand, four people on the team, a strong Instagram presence, and exactly zero presence in China. The founder had read everything about Xiaohongshu. She was convinced it was the right platform. She was right. But her first question was the one I hear every time: “Where do we even start?”

Xiaohongshu has 300 million monthly active users in 2026. About 70% are women. The average user opens the app 11 times a day. For a small fashion brand, it is the highest-ROI platform to test China without a large team or a large budget. But starting from zero requires a specific sequence. This is what works.

Step 1: Create the Brand Account Before Anything Else

Set up an official brand account (企业号), not a personal account. The difference matters: brand accounts get access to commercial analytics, product linking once you have a shop, and a verified badge that builds trust immediately.

What you need to register a brand account:

  • A registered business entity (Chinese entity not required — foreign registration works)
  • Trademark in China or proof of application
  • Business license or equivalent foreign registration document
  • A local phone number for SMS verification (we handle this for clients)

The account name should match your brand name exactly, in both Latin script and, where possible, a Chinese brand name. A phonetic Chinese name is better than nothing. A meaningful Chinese name is better than phonetic.

Step 2: Publish 9-12 Posts Before Promoting Anything

Xiaohongshu’s algorithm evaluates new accounts on the first 2-3 weeks of content before deciding whether to distribute your posts. If the account looks empty or inconsistent, it gets throttled before it starts.

The first 9-12 posts should cover:

  • Brand story: where the brand is from, who founded it, what the product philosophy is. Chinese consumers in 2026 want provenance and authenticity, especially from European SMEs.
  • Product detail posts: close-up photography, material callouts, sizing guides in Chinese standards (EU to CN conversion), care instructions.
  • Lifestyle context: how to wear it, when to wear it, who wears it. Real people, real settings. Xiaohongshu users distrust over-produced content.

Format: the best-performing posts in fashion on Xiaohongshu in 2026 are carousel images (5-9 slides) with a detailed text caption of 200-500 characters. Short-form video (30-60 seconds) performs well for product reveals and unboxings. Avoid purely promotional content in the first month — the algorithm penalises it and users ignore it.

Step 3: Use KOC Seeding to Build Social Proof

Before spending on ads, build social proof through micro-influencers (KOC — Key Opinion Consumers, 1K-30K followers). Their content appears organic and their followers trust them more than brand accounts.

The brief for KOC content:

  • Authentic unboxing or try-on, shot in natural light, no studio
  • Personal opinion on fit, quality, and how it fits their style
  • Brand name and product name tagged in the post
  • No scripted lines — Xiaohongshu users spot scripted content immediately

Budget per KOC: €150-500 in product value plus €100-300 in fee, depending on account size and engagement rate. For a starting budget of €3,000-5,000, you can seed 8-15 KOCs in the first month. This generates 8-15 pieces of content that show up in search results when users look for your brand name or product category.

Our KOL and KOC team manages the entire seeding process, including identifying relevant accounts, handling product shipment to China, and approving content before it posts.

Step 4: Activate Search Keywords

Xiaohongshu functions as a search engine for product discovery. In 2026, over 60% of fashion-related sessions on the platform begin with a search, not a feed scroll. Your content must be findable.

Keyword strategy for a small fashion brand:

  • Include the product category in Chinese in the caption and hashtags (e.g., 法式风格 for French style, 小众品牌 for niche brands, 通勤穿搭 for office outfits)
  • Use 3-5 topic hashtags per post, not 20 — the algorithm penalises hashtag stuffing in 2026
  • Publish content that answers the questions users actually search for: “什么牌子的包好看” (which bag brands look good), “法国小众品牌推荐” (recommended French niche brands)

A useful reference: the r/Marketing_China community regularly discusses what is working on Xiaohongshu keyword strategy from practitioners in the field.

Step 5: Open the Shop Only After You Have Traction

Xiaohongshu’s in-app shop (小红书电商) is available to brand accounts. But opening it before you have organic traction is a waste. The shop converts best when users are already searching for your brand name and finding content.

The threshold I use with clients: wait until you have at least 1,000 followers and 5+ posts with over 500 likes each. That typically takes 6-10 weeks if the seeding programme is running well. Then open the shop, link products to existing posts, and run the first Xiaohongshu ad campaign targeting users who engaged with your content.

Stage Timeline Budget
Account setup + first 9 posts Week 1-2 €1,500-3,000 (content production)
KOC seeding (8-15 accounts) Week 2-6 €3,000-6,000
Keyword optimisation + posting cadence Ongoing €500-1,000/month (management)
Shop opening + first ad spend Week 6-10 €2,000-4,000
