Paulo spent eight months and eighty thousand euros building a China website for his Portuguese leather goods brand. Clean design. Full Chinese translation. Optimized content. When he showed me the traffic numbers, there was silence on both sides of the call. Fifteen visitors per day. On a good day.
“What went wrong?” he asked. Nothing went wrong with the website. The website was the wrong investment entirely.
How Chinese Consumers Actually Discover Fashion Brands in 2026
Chinese consumers do not discover brands by typing a URL into a browser. They do not Google your brand. They do not land on your homepage from a search. The discovery journey in China looks like this: XHS post from a KOL or peer review, brand search on Tmall, Tmall product page review, purchase. Your standalone website may not appear anywhere in that chain.
Google is blocked in China. Baidu dominates search but strongly favors Chinese-registered businesses, news sites, and its own ecosystem. A foreign brand website on a foreign domain, hosted abroad, with a .com extension has almost zero chance of ranking for competitive fashion keywords on Baidu.
More importantly: Chinese consumers do not trust brand websites the way Western consumers do. They trust XHS peer reviews. They trust Tmall seller ratings. They trust WeChat group recommendations. A beautiful brand website signals nothing to a Chinese buyer who has not yet discovered you on a platform they already trust.
Where to Actually Invest Your China Digital Budget
- XHS (Xiaohongshu / RedNote): This is where Chinese consumers discover new brands. Peer reviews, KOL content, and brand accounts on XHS drive fashion discovery for 18 to 35 year-old urban consumers more than any other channel. Start here.
- Tmall flagship store: This is your China “website.” Your Tmall store is where Chinese consumers validate your brand, read reviews, and buy. A well-built Tmall store does the job that your standalone website cannot do.
- WeChat official account: This is your China CRM. After a consumer discovers your brand on XHS and buys on Tmall, WeChat is where you retain them: exclusive content, member promotions, private group management for VIP clients.
- Douyin: This is your video discovery channel, particularly effective for fashion and lifestyle categories where visual storytelling drives impulse purchase.
Paulo redirected his remaining budget to XHS and Tmall setup. Six months later: 18,000 XHS followers, a Tmall store with 200-plus monthly orders, and a waitlist for his best-selling bag style.
The eighty thousand euro website still exists. It gets fifteen visitors per day.
Voilà pourquoi: in China, your “website” is your Tmall store. Your “social media” is XHS and Douyin. Your “CRM” is WeChat. Design your China digital presence for Chinese platforms, not for Chinese browsers.
